Ha!

Great writeup. It sounds like it wasn't an evangelical or fundamentalist mega-church which I'm sure made it far more tolerable to attend. The fundies would probably say that the folks there aren't "real" Christians... but they're probably far nicer than the bible-thumping, hellfire and damnation set.

Glad to hear you didn't burst into flames. I think you need to step up to an old-time evangelical tent revival next. Very wishy washy.
And you're right, I meant to say that in my writeup, that fundies are probably outraged by a place like this. They certainly do cherrypick the bible to an enormous degree.

LOL, I don't know about going to a tent revival. We have a local pentecostal church around the corner. But Butch was barely able to tolerate the service at the megachurch. I really doubt I'd get him into an old-timey church! Then we seriously would burst into flames! I'm an atheist and my wife is a christian (very liberal) and this is where we went to church every Sunday. We even volunteered in the nursery once a month [I often wonder if I would have been allowed if they knew I was an unbeliever]. I agree that this is one of the least offensive churches I've ever been to. Tim is a very good speaker but is still fooled by all of the bullshit and it makes me sad that he is so good at pulling the wool over so many peoples' eyes.

Just before we moved the church did two things that annoyed me more than usual. First, they started advertising an apologetics class. They were actually going to be training people to lie for Jesus. As a scientist and evolutionary biologist, this one really bothered me. There were several times that Tim affirmed his believe in a young Earth. Second, they did a series of Sundays that involved people asking whatever questions they wanted via text, tweet, e-mail, whatever. I submitted my questions. I sent in long and short versions of each question. I still have them if you'd like to see them. Here are the short versions.

If Jesus took the punishment for our sins, why isn't He still dead?
Why does God feel the need to be worshiped constantly?
Does God sin?
If God is perfect, why is His Word so chock full of apparent contradictions (which lead to confusion even among believers)?
Why does God want people to go to hell? [You really need to read the long version of this one.]
If God is omniscient, why pray?
Why does God condone child sacrifice and slavery?
Why does God play favorites?
Why did God create us flawed and then decide to punish us for it?

I'm sad to say that only one of these questions was addressed, the last one. Unfortunately, Tim sidestepped it rather than answering it. I did meet many good people at that church and I'm still friends with some.Davidhttp://www.crocoduck.bch.msstate.edu/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2352648376305239677.post-34072889623873955602010-08-30T15:28:22.000-04:002010-08-30T15:28:22.000-04:00Neece, this is a magnificent write-up. I agree with everyone else in that the church is a pleasant experience. I've been their twice and enjoyed it both times, though I must confess before ye, my almighty wicked heathens, that I ne'er believed in anything but the humanist side of the message.gustavolk-swagenhttp://gusonthought.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2352648376305239677.post-24824196437978603932010-08-30T16:40:38.000-04:002010-08-30T16:40:38.000-04:00Yeh we have a couple of those in our county too. That wasn't conveyed in the service, but I got the impression we only saw the tip of the iceberg of what Chestnut Ridge was all about.
Those are great questions! I'd love to see the long versions. You won't see me repeating the process again if I can help it. I hope your daughter and son-in-law had a nice trip through West BY GOD Virginia. :P
Thanks Angie. Yes, if you follow Jesus you'll have it much easier than if you try to go it alone. In which case God will make you suffer.
