Going to church makes you a good person...

...Like putting on a chicken suit makes you a chicken. When others say they're a good person because they go to church, it irritates me. There was a program on TV about the Jonas Brothers and the announcer said they're really good boys, really religious, and go to church. WTF?! What the hell does church and religion have to do with being a good person? There's really terrible (serial killer type) people that go to church everyday. Then there's wonderful atheists that never been to church, that have contributed more to society then these religious folks could ever imagine. Guess what I'm an Atheist, it's been 10 or more years since I went to church, and I'm a good person. I rescued 2 birds and gave them a wonderful home. I do everything I can to help the planet, recycling, using reusable bags when I shop. I sign petitions that help animals, the earth, and fellow humans. To be honest with you I know only 1 Christian that does anything to help make the world a better place. Going to church doesn't make one a good person. It's what an individual does in the world that does.

  1. I think we need to ignore the Christian claims and change the dialogue over to one of morality. I have been deflecting the religious claims for 7 decades. Instead of being antagonized by their ignorance, I used their actions to teach my children about immorality. I had lots of examples.

  2. Great example, Colleen. And great lolcat too! :D I don't wear chicken suits and I haven't gone to church since I was 12, but look at me, I'm all sugar and spice and everything nice. :P
Like I think I've mentioned, I only know 2 church goers who are actually good people. The rest of the people I know who are "good" christians are back-stabbing nasty bitter gossipy creeps, or some variation thereof.
Oh, and welcome to HDC. We're glad to have you! :D

I know what you mean that describes most of the Christians I know too.

  4. You're welcome Colleen. :) Well, it's not like their instruction manual is really very clear on morals. But that's no excuse either, really. Because somehow I've become a rather ethical person without any invisible man in the sky threatening me. :P

  5. Same here. There's stats, I forgot where exactly I saw them. But there more Christians in prisons then Atheists.

  6. So....if you go to church wearing a chicken suit, does that make you a good chicken?
