Christmas Tree Nonsense

My friend AJ sent me this picture and I had to share it with you, after my brain stopped fizzling:

crucifix-christmas-tree

What is the reasoning here? "Let's celebrate the birth of our savior, but let's make sure we focus on his crucifixion at the same time? What would easter look like then? Would you have to mix holiday symbols there too?

Update: Here's the news story that explains the above image.

Of course, the bible mentions the "christmas" tree in the old testament, and they aren't too keen on it:

Jeremiah 10:2-4: "Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not."

Jeremiah10-2

Here is another version which reads a bit differently:

Jeremiah 10: 2 Thus says the LORD, "Do not learn the way of the nations, And do not be terrified by the signs of the heavens Although the nations are terrified by them; 3 For the customs of the peoples are delusion; Because it is wood cut from the forest, The work of the hands of a craftsman with a cutting tool. 4 They decorate it with silver and with gold; They fasten it with nails and with hammers So that it will not totter.

Oh, oops, sorry baby jesus, I guess we shouldn't be decorating trees to celebrate your birth, especially since we stole the idea from the heathens. But of course, then they say, jesus is the reason for the season. But I say, the Winter Solstice is really the reason for the season, if you're going to celebrate anything.

This works well too, the Flying Spaghetti Monster as a tree topper:

a_fsm_treeHappy Holidays my friends!

  1. Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like a fake pine tree with a giant death fetish stuck in the middle of it.

  2. The Jeremiah passage (like Isaiah 44) is talking about making idols, not Christmas trees. But you knew that, right?

  3. Looks like to me that that particular tree has now become an idol. Also, a Christmas tree is residue from a pagan holiday. Jesus somewhere specifically said not to celebrate such nonsense, Neece made an article on that elsewhere.

Anyways, nothing like being so incredibly dense about our deforestation problems than to have your very owned chopped down tree.

  4. Why do they hate the joy and merriment of the Christmas celebration?

  5. My brain blew a fuse. Anybody else want to take this? Bah, fine, I'll do it.

How... do I reach theeeese kids?

Anyways, you are so far off. You're like the *censored* that claim terrorists hate American's freedoms. And yes, I will call them *censored*, to not realize they might hate us because we terrorize them on a daily basis. We don't hate Sweden for having more freedom than us do we? But enough of that.

*censoring provided by myself, just to be a little more clean. Also, because real *censored* probably have more intellect than those *censored*.

You have no sensible grasp of Christmas. It's our disagreement that you don't even have a notion of what Christmas is. Is it the birth of Jesus? No, even if Jesus was real that wouldn't be the case. Which is something you guys just don't seem to get through your thick skulls.

But you don't even understand that Christmas trees, have no place in your religion. We hate the hypocrisy that you even think it's a part of your religion. We hate the hypocrisy that celebrating such a holiday is supposed to be a sin in your religion, yet you do it anyways and claim it is a part. Maybe even hate the amount of greed present throughout the holidays, or the fact you like to trumpet your religion over everybody during it without realizing it just wasn't your holiday in the first place.

We hate that you think you have to be a Christian, to celebrate or even enjoy the holiday.

And I use hate very loosely here, because it's not really hate, which is something you also do not understand. Are you so twisted in religious hatred that you think disagreeing with something is akin to hate?

    .

No, I love Christmas. I love giving gifts to my family, relatives, and girlfriend if I have one at the time. Always have, always will. But then again, I never really needed a fake notion to do that, I do it throughout the year.

  6. What do you mean? Killing trees for baby Jesus' fake birthday is what this country was founded on!

I never knew that was in the bible. Thanks so much for pointing it out. It's going to provide hours of fun this xmas season.

  7. No kidding! Well said, Buffy. :P

  8. I agree with GMN, the xmas tree is now an idol, stolen from pagan mythology.

I also agree, it's awful to cut down a tree which you will dispose of a few weeks later. How wasteful and destructive, as well as selfish.

  9. GMN is right. I don't hate the joy and merriment. I hate the fake commercialism, the smug superiority of self-righteous christians this time of year, the greed and obligation of the holiday, the stolen symbolism that christians now embrace as their own, even though it was added just to increase the christian population and convert ignorant pagans from their older religions.

It's all so fake. If jesus existed, which I doubt, he wasn't born on December 25. And he certainly wasn't born of a virgin.

And by the way, Santa doesn't visit every good boy and girl on xmas eve and give them toys. That's just as mythological.

  10. HA! Excellent, Sibyl. Feel free to let us know how it went with the family and this bit of bible trivia. :)

  11. Was Charon meaning atheists, or "them" as in Christians? That cross tree sure seems to be Debbie Downer in that idealic Christmas scene.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The only context it could really be is "them" as atheists, and in particular, Neece and everybody who posted before.

It would make about zero sense in relation to the article otherwise, since Neece argued against some traditions.

  13. Is the Christmas tree a pagan symbol having nothing to do with the birth of Jesus? Of course it is, just like holly wreaths, mistletoe and the Yule log. Is it wasteful and destructive? Certainly not, since nearly all commercially sold Christmas trees are grown on tree farms for that express purpose.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sorry, but it is very wasteful and destructive.

Just because they came from tree farms doesn't make it non-wasteful. That area? Could have trees that are more productive, faster, and efficient. There are tons of other uses for those trees besides being a silly decoration for a week.

Under your call, anything made of wood is not wasteful or destructive, which is completely far from the truth.

  15. I beg to differ too. Using land and resources just to grow a crop of christmas trees that will be disposed of after a week is amazingly wasteful. Considering how valuable trees are to our survival as a species (in helping to regulate carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, for just one example of many), and considering how delicate the ecosystem is, it's downright stupid.

  16. Would Scot be OK with stem-cell research and infant testing if those babies were "grown on baby farms for that express purpose"? Just because we designate a specific location and purpose for something, it does not justify unethical actions; it can still be wasteful and destructive.
