A New Version Of The Religion Test

So here's another test to see what you know about religion to follow up from the Pew Research review.  This one was written by Nicholas D. Kristoff for the NY Times. Some questions have more than one correct answer. Answers are at the bottom.

So how did you do? This one was tougher for me. I knew the Old and New Testament questions, but missed a couple Muslim ones, as well as the Hindu question. What questions would you add? (give us the answers if you want to add a question, please!)

Answers:
1. b. Deuteronomy 22:21.
2. a. Koran, 2:256. But other sections of the Koran do describe coercion.
3. c. Most early suicide bombings were by Tamil Hindus (some secular) in Sri Lanka and India.
4. c. Hadith. Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet to be revered.
5. All of the above.
6. c. Other parts of the New and Old Testaments object to homosexuality, but there’s no indication of Jesus’ views.
7. c. Koran, 41:34. Jesus says much the same thing in different words.
8. b. Amos 9:7

10. all of these. Muhammad’s Jewish wife was seized in battle, which undermines the spirit of the gesture. By some accounts he had a second Jewish wife as well.

13. b. St. Paul, both in 1 Corinthians 14 and 1 Timothy 2, but many scholars believe that neither section was actually written by Paul.

  1. That definitely seemed a lot harder than the other one, though I hardly think that being able to recognize quotations from a particular translation is a very useful kind of knowledge.

    I didn't realize Muhammad married a Jew. Given his extensive killings of Jews in the Qur'an for the most ludicrous reasons (like some of them saying he was telling their stories wrong, which he was as anyone who's read the Torah/OT should easily recognize) I would've figured marrying a Jew was about the last thing he wanted.

  2. I completely agree, Frans. I think the information required to ace this quiz is a bit more esoteric. The reason he asked those questions was to prove a point though. He never stated what that point was clearly so I didn't extrapolate for him.

    Yes, it is interesting that he married a Jew. He obviously didn't marry her to get to know her and her people.
