Yet Another Experiment

Last December if you had asked me about my friends, I would have told you they were all nonbelievers of some persuasion or another. But back then I ran into a fellow blogger who is a devout Catholic. Roxane wrote about me and I felt obliged to write back. Instead of getting into a "blog war" we decided to take our conversation privately to email and have been writing each other back and forth ever since.

Now I would call her a friend. Do I understand her worldview? Does it make sense to me? No, it really doesn't. But she seems like a good person, kind and compassionate. With Roxane, I've been learning to see that there are religious people who aren't like the media stereotypes that make me apoplectic with impotent indignation.

Interestingly, in this same time period I've also come to see several family members that are also moderately religious to seriously devout in a new light. I've engaged them as well, and it has really expanded my perspective of people who are so diametrically opposed to how I view the world. It's been eye-0pening to say the least.

Last week Roxane got a crazy idea that she and I should co-write a blog. Nothing intense, just a weekly joint post. She thought I'd say no, but I surprised her and said yes immediately. So we started AtheistCatholic.com and today was our first post.

In the past couple of days I've told a few of my friends about what I'm doing. I've gotten mixed responses. Some people said I'm wasting my time. Others thought it was a good idea. First I should probably explain the goal of this new experiment. Because that is most definitely what it is. It might not work out, but I'm willing to give it a good ol' college try.

We want to share some of our discussion publicly, and have people join our conversation, mainly about our worldviews. It's not a place for debate or attacking the opposing team. It's more about coming to hopefully understand each other, and maybe even learn more about ourselves in the process. I've done that with Roxane already so I want to share that insight and hopefully get even more from the interactions we have over there.

One more thing. I am not being an accommodationist here. This isn't about compromising and bending over backward to the religious worldview. As you know, I have very strong opinions about naturalism/atheism and religion. But, this is about people getting along, being friends despite opposite viewpoints, and learning about others and ourselves.

If you're interested in joining the conversation, head over there and say hi. Just please be courteous. This is about building bridges, not isolating ourselves.

I'm Curious!

The other day I shared my favorite podcasts, one of which was the SGU. Well, I just found a new one! From Skepchick.org with Rebecca Watson comes a new podcast called Curiosity Aroused. There's one episode up now which is about calorie restriction for long life. The episode is about 20 minutes long and you can subscribe through iTunes.

In the first episode, they talk to Monica Reinagel who is pretty neat in her own right. She's a nutrition expert and through her short podcast and blog she helps weed through the hype and nonsense of nutrition. As a person who wonders what is fact and what is bullshit when it comes to food, diet and the like, it's very cool to find a resource for good information.

Here are her sites:

www.nutritiondata.com: her blog is on here along with a wealth of information.

http://nutritiondiva.quickanddirtytips.com/: Her podcasts are on here. If you go to listen or read and episode, you can then find the link to iTunes to subscribe and get them all. They are each about 5 minutes long.

Do you have any great resources for good nutrition and diet that are based in science and research? Please feel free to share! :)

Heaving Dead Cats Now Available On Kindle!

screenshot1This is just the coolest thing. I got Heaving Dead Cats published to Kindle! Now if you have a Kindle, you can read HDC on it. If you feel so inclined, you can go there and write a review or add some keywords. I would be so grateful if you did, but no pressure.

Ok, back to your regularly scheduled programming. :D

Conversations with Craig the Christian 3: More Cherry-Picking

war is sent by godI have a bunch of stuff I want to wrap up into one post.

  • Craig the Christian has started his own blog, based on his conversations with me. You can visit it at Simul Eustis et Pecator. On that note, he had emailed me several days ago and I finally replied. So I'll post that conversation down below.

  • On Friday, I posted my story to de-conversion. It's basically the same as here, but they invited me and I thought I'd cross post over there to give support to others de-converting.

  • I finished The City of Ember, the book. I know a couple of you commented and said you were going to get it. Well, I have to say the movie was better in several ways and the book was a bit disappointing. I don't want to ruin it for you, but if you're interested I'll give you a review. Let me know.

  • I've basically made the change to this new theme for the blog. I hope you like it and find that it looks and works better. If you see anything that needs fixing, please let me know and I'll do my best to get it working even better.

Conversations with Craig the Christian 3

The other day, I wrote about Bible Quotes and Craig didn't like it. He said:
"...it was taking pop shots at Christianity. What came to my mind was "If you can't beat them, join them. ....I interpreted it as since Christians tend to cherry pick and logic doesn't work on them, we'll do the exact same thing."

Here is my response:
I have to say no, that is the opposite of what I was trying to express with that post. I was basically saying this:

If you Believe and have Faith that the bible is the true and faithful word of god, then you must take the bible in its entirety, with all the hate, jealousy, killing, wars, murder, sacrifice and horror that it encompasses. You don’t get to cherry-pick just the happy, touchy-feely verses and sweep the rest under the rug, pretending they don’t exist.

No. In fact, you might want to look at the bible’s uglier side (which is much larger than the nice bits) and really contemplate if this god you worship faithfully is really who you think he is. Are you sure he’s even a god? He sounds pretty much like a very angry jealous mythical creature. That’s what I meant.

A Neece Update

Have you ever been spread too thin? Like butter and jelly on toast... and there's just not enough to get all the corners. It's edible but not as delicious as it could be. I'm like that. My company came and went, but I feel like I'm still run down. My husband and I are fighting a flu or cold or something too.

To top it off, I have too many pans in the fire. Tomorrow I'll take one pan out by consolidating one more blog into this one. Actually, you might notice that I've already imported the few articles I wanted to save from there. Tomorrow is when I do the forwarding.

Anyway, that's the good news. One less thing pulling me away from Heaving Dead Cats. Because we all want to heave dead cats, now don't we! :D I sure hope we don't catch this nasty cold we're fighting off. If I disappear for a few days, it means I'm miserable, on the couch, unable to get to my computer. I'll be back though. I make a mean chicken soup when I'm sick. I don't think it gets me better any faster, but it sure is comforting.

We're still looking for contributors and authors, whether you want to submit something once, or you want to do a regular post. Email me at heavingdeadcats@gmail.com.
