A Loss of Wisdom Squared

Today I'm getting my upper wisdom teeth yanked. So I have no idea how long I'll feel icky. I have some ideas brewing but I don't have time to give them the thought they deserve before my appointment so I thought I'd give you some lolcats and other fun or thought-provoking pictures today.

ur crappy day is irrelevant. I have unmet needs.

Politics: noun- frum Greek - "Poli" - many; "tics" - blood sucking parasites.

Beware of Dogma

You appear to be lost in thought...
I know it's unfamiliar territory for you. Shall I send a rescue party?

Zombie Apocalypse: Chances are, you're already surrounded by mindless, bloodthirsty, half-alive, subhuman wretches. An actual zombie outbreak would just give you an excuse to do something constructive.

C'mon, c'mon, it's either one or the other!

Interesting Thought Provoking Blasphemous Pictures

Hey everyone, I'm sorry I've been so busy with personal stuff I haven't had much of a chance to blog for you guys. My family is arriving today for a long weekend so here are a few pictures to amuse you until I can get back to "normal".

See More with Atheism

Sir David Attenborough (from Life on Air, BBC)

"I often get letters, quite frequently, from people who say how they like the programmes a lot, but I never give credit to the almighty power that created nature. To which I reply and say, "Well, it's funny that the people, when they say that this evidence of the Almighty, always quote beautiful things. They always quote orchids and hummingbirds and butterflies and roses." But I always have to think too of a little boy sitting on the banks of a river in west Africa who has a worm boring through his eyeball, turning him blind before he's five years old. And I replay and say, "Well, presumably the God you speak about created the worm as well," and now, I find that baffling to credit a merciful god with that action. And therefore it seems to me safer to show things that I know about the truth, truthful and factual, and allow people to make up their own minds about the moralities of this thing, or indeed the theology of this thing."

Sick of Being Sick, So Here Are Some Lolcats and Funnies

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry I've been so quiet lately. Last weekend I caught a bad cold and I've been getting more miserable as it's settled in my lungs. So, since my brain hurts and I don't have anything intelligent to say, here are some funny or thought provoking cartoons and some lolcats to amuse you.

Prayer: The original Slactivism

Crucifixion Cake

I'm Now A True Believer of Intelligent Design!

I've recently purchased a very handy book that explains Intelligent Design so well that I must abandon my godless heathen ways and start believing. Praise be to my wonderful friend Dan who shared this deeply moving tome with me! May the Intelligent Designer bless you and actually answer your prayers!

I am sure you'll want to get this great book too. It's so easy to read, which is what I like. No big fancy words or concepts. It's called The Intelligent Design Coloring Book by Pastor Brett Pirkle. It's not just a coloring book, it also has other activities in at as well! What more could you ask for?

Be honest, wouldn't you rather read a fun book with pictures to color and "science glasses" to cut out and wear, than try to muddle through some dry old book like God Is Not Great by some guy who uses big words in a foreign language like British? I knew you'd agree.

Need more convincing? How about the picture of the front cover? This book is blissfully 100% Fact Free! What more can you ask for? Who needs boring old facts when you can just have Faith?

You're still not convinced? Boy, you sure are a Doubting Thomas. The Intelligent Designer is going to make you burn in Hell for all eternity if you don't start believing without evidence. You don't want that, do you? Do You?! No, I didn't think so!

Ok, here is an excerpt:
Faith and Science

Letting the Holiday Pendulum Come to the Middle

I like things in balance. I like moderation. I don't always eat in moderation, but I understand I'd probably be happier if I did. I know we can't always be balanced, of course, but sometimes the middle ground is a nice, mellow place to be.

As you know, I don't talk about politics, but if you asked me what I am, I'd probably label myself some sort of moderate. I think both extremes are unhealthy. When you start talking about diets where something is given up, I think moderation is a much more realistic goal.

Certainly there are areas where denial of something is for the best, where something like alcohol or cigarettes are completely harmful (alcohol is not completely harmful to most people, but to someone who can't control their intake, then it is definitely a serious problem).

Anyway, what am I rambling on about? Well, I was raised in a traditional dysfunctional christian household with Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. Even after I shed the heavy dead albatross of religion and became a godless heathen, I still put up a tree, gave christmas cards and gifts, and had christmas dinners with family.

Then a couple of years ago I completely swung the other way. I ditched the tree and decorations, told people I'd rather just spend time with them during the holidays than exchange gifts or cards (thereby abandoning the stress, guilt and huge expense), and basically just went to family dinners (well, can you blame me? Good food should never be forsaken!)

But a friend's status update on Facebook a few minutes ago reminded me that maybe my little black cindered grinch heart is still beating after all. My friend merely said that he was getting ready to celebrate Festivus and I thought, "Oh, that sounds like fun. A secular celebration!" So I don't have to seem like such a scrooge. I can just say I celebrate something different.

Happy Heathen Halloween!

Hi Everyone! Happy Heathen Halloween! Today my local Morgantown Atheists are having a party to celebrate Halloween. Right now the Rally to Restore Sanity is on, and hopefully we have already voted or will this coming Tuesday. I was hoping to vote today but it didn't happen since I had to make Italian Sausages and Peppers in the crock pot this morning for the party. That, and I still have to see who's best for the Board of Education here. I think that's probably the most important local office position.

Oh, and tomorrow is my anniversary! Butch and I got married on Halloween in 1996, so this is our 14 year anniversary. So to celebrate so many occasions, here are some lolcats. Enjoy and have a scary weekend full of sweets and treats. :)

This is another one of those instances where you find out why all the ER nurses know you by name and why they always have a bed ready for you.

BRAINS! BRAINS!!!!!

For Entertainment Purposes Only

Hi everyone! I probably should have warned you ahead of time, but I've been so busy I really haven't had much of a chance. Labor Day weekend is "family time." Butch (my longsuffering and adoring husband) had his brother and best friend in town for the annual Labor Day family reunion. So I cleaned and polished and got ready for his friend to stay with us for a few days, and then prepared for several days of family events including the reunion on Sunday. I ate WAY too much delicious Italian food and laughed an awful lot. It all wrapped up last night and now I'm trying to recover. It's a lot for a curmudgeonly, grinch-hearted, soulless, socially phobic hermit to deal with every year.

So, I just wanted to say hi and give you some lolcats and funny pictures to amuse you till I can get back on track. I hope you had a great, long weekend as well.

Little did you know that the freezer is a closely guarded porthole to hell.

How about some funny or insightful cartoons and pictures for a light Friday the 13th treat?

How The New Testament Came About

God: Hey Jews.
Jews: Hey.
God: So listen guys, I'm thinking we go in a different direction with this whole religion.
Jews: What?
God: You know, do a non-gritty reboot. Same God taste, new God packaging. That sort of thing.
Jews: We don't follow.
God: Okay, work with me here guys. Remember the whole ‘angry God' thing?
Jews:
Vividly.
God: Where I killed a whole bunch of you and-
Jews: Yeah.
God: And forty years in the-
Jews: We remember that.
God: Not to mention Robo-Hitler. Yikes.
Jews: Wait, what?
God: Whoops, forget I said that. "Spoiler Alert", am I right?
Jews: ...
God: Anyway, we're going to re-work this whole “God- thing. For example, kid-friendly is big these days in religion.
Jews: So, like...?

The Adventures of God

I
God: Noah, all the people of earth are sinners. You alone are righteous.
Noah: Thanks God. Long time fan, first time prophet.
God: So, I have decided to smite the entire world with a flood.
(pause)
Noah: Couldn’t you just teach man goodness?
God: No. I’m thinking “flood”.
Noah: So you’d rather just kill every-
God: What part of “flood” do you not understand?

II
God: Moses…I have seen the plight of the Jews in Egypt.
Moses: Wow. Only after, uh, 400 years there, right?
God: Yes.
Moses: Awesome.
God: I will take you out of Egypt after ten terrible, terrible plagues.
Moses: …ten?
God: Is there a problem?
Moses: It’s just…ten is a lot. For, you know, God. Couldn’t you get this done in like, two plagues max?

We Need the Science Cops

The Tree Lobsters have said exactly what I was trying to say over a year ago, only much more concisely and with a lol. Don't you hate it when tree lobsters upstage you? I do!

Evolution is a sham! The earth is only 6000 years old, therefore there hasn't been

Hoppy Easter, Fellow Heathens

Hoppy Easter, my fellow godless heathens! Today is the day we celebrate the death of a failed prophet from 2,000 years ago, with plastic grass, candy, chocolate and bunnies who lay candy eggs. I feel decidedly schizophrenic just thinking about it. Yet most people who believe this stuff have no problem with the cognitive dissonance.

So let's celebrate the zombie jew returning from the dead and plaguing us with mindless followers for thousands of years with funny pictures!

Proof that bunnies come from tomato patches, then lay candy eggs in April.

Ceiling Cat takes on the Easter Holiday by laying an egg

Ricky Gervais Teaches Genesis

Apparently Darwin got it wrong. Ricky Gervais, one of my favorite comedians (who also happens to be an outspoken atheist), did a standup special called Animals. I think it was some time ago. I just saw a clip of it a few minutes ago and had to share it with you. I hope you learn as much as I did. I really appreciate God now. I mean, come on, he created Light in complete darkness! Amazing! :P (about 10 minutes long)

Another Gem From Mr. Deity

Mr. Deity And The Equation
Mr. Deity frantically throws together his own version of science in an attempt to save his job. This one is excellent.

Mr. Deity has a newsletter now too. This is the penultimate episode of Season Three, so if you haven't seen the rest of them, catch up from the beginning.

Ideas About Atheist Groups

As you may know, I'm the co-cat herder (co-director) of Morgantown Atheists, a local group for unbelievers. I'm also the coordinator for Morgantown Coalition of Reason, an umbrella organization that encompasses Morgantown Atheists and other local groups so that we can work together in the name of Reason.

The funny thing is, I'm not really a people person. Like a lot of atheists (supposedly), I'm quite an outsider, as much of a hermit as I can get away with, in fact. I have never liked going out in crowds or socializing with large groups of people.

Why am I telling you all of this? Because I have realized something that I want to share with you. Even though I'm a curmudgeonly hermit-y atheist, I love going to the 3 atheist/freethinker meetings we have every month. That's 3 Sundays a month where I happily leave the house and go socialize with a small group of people. And I look forward to it. The one or 2 Sundays where we don't meet I miss it.

Even people like me benefit from social community and contact. The beauty of the atheist/freethinker community is that we are relatively like-minded. We have a foundation of common ground. But we are also quite different, of course, which is good because that makes things interesting. The added bonus of freethinkers, skeptics and atheists is that we seem relatively level-headed (overall - there are exceptions,  of course) and we argue and discuss matters with interest and fairness. No drama llama is invited! So it's actually fun and mentally stimulating.

I think we all need some type of community, which is one thing that religion has in its favor that being a lone atheist does not.

But this is easily remedied. I thought I'd share some thoughts on how to get involved with a secular group of like-minded people. If none exist in your area, you can start one up.

Tips For Finding A Local Atheist/Humanist/Freethinker/Skeptical Community

Happy Spring Equinox!

So yesterday was the Spring (Vernal) Equinox in the northern hemisphere. It was at 12:32 pm to be exact. Many different cultures have celebrated in different ways. But my friends and I at Morgantown Atheists thought we'd celebrate in our own way. We got together, ate delicious food, talked about anything and everything, had a book meeting, had a Nature Walk on our friends' farm and generally enjoyed ourselves, nature, and spring returning.

I thought I'd share some pictures from our Nature Walk.

In our conversations we talked about how people struggle when they are questioning their faith. It's different for everyone, but some of the big things you have to give up are:

  • Your consciousness living forever in heaven. Life after death.

  • Someone thinking for you, telling you what your morals are, and spoon-feeding you the big answers to questions about why we're here, etc.

  • Community from your church. Sometimes this is everyone you know. Family and friends.
